Dog Grooming Clippers vs. Human Clippers: What’s the Difference?

PETE DECKER / OCTOBER 10, 2019 / DOGS

The clippers used to trim dog hair may not seem different from the ones your barber uses to trim your hair. However, if you take a closer look, you will start to notice a few subtle differences between the two. For instance, the blade on the dog’s clipper is designed to prevent the pet’s hair from pulling, which is different from the blade used at the barber. The pet clippers also have a wide variety of motors and blades to cut different types of fur. Because of this versatility in design, pet clippers will cost more than human ones.

The following are some of the main differences between a dog grooming clipper and a human clipper.

1

Motor

Typically, a human hair cut doesn’t take too much time. In fact, a professional should be able to do it in just a few minutes. Once the job is done, the clipper will be shut down and allowed to cool in time for the next client. However, grooming the dog’s entire body is not the same. It will take more time than a human cut. In that case, you will notice that dog clippers can work for longer hours without getting hot. The motor in the dog clipper will also be relatively lighter. It comes with a series of baffles that will minimize the vibration and the sound produced by the clipper.

2

Blades

Blades in human hair clippers have very fine teeth. You will also realize that most human clippers feature a standard size blade often referred to as the No. 000. This blade can cut hair 0.2 mm to 0.008 inches away from the scalp. Although such a fine blade is great for human hair, it won’t work for a dog. It will easily get caught up in your pet’s hair, which could lead to discomfort for the pet. A majority of dog clippers come with the No. 10 blade size. The blade will leave 1/16 inches of hair on your dog’s body after use. This means that your pet will look neat and tidy without losing too much of its hair.

3

Kits

Dog clipper kits offer a series of special accessories including combs and brushes that make it easier for you to groom your pet. Pet combs, in particular, are very important because they help you deliver an even cut. Human clipper kits also have these accessories, but all of them are designed to be more suitable for humans as opposed to dogs. If you decide to use a human clipper for your dog, you will need to spend more on additional accessories. In the end, the cost will be way higher compared to a traditional dog clipper.

Why You Can’t Use A Human Clipper On Your Dog

First of all, the teeth on human clippers are arranged very differently compared to dog clippers. For example, the arrangement of teeth on dog grooming clippers is opposite that of humans. This means that, if a human clipper is used on a dog, it’s very likely that it will not work. It will also cause a lot of discomfort on your pet. The human clipper doesn’t have the required speed to pass through the thick hair on your dog.

Human clippers are suitable only for light hair and they will get damaged easily if used on thick coated pets. With these limitations, the only way to deliver excellent grooming for your dog is through a dog grooming clipper. It’s purposefully designed for this and it will do an excellent job.
