What Are The Best Times To Walk Your Dog?

Dog experts recommend that you try to walk your dog at the same time every day. You should follow a regular schedule so your pooch will be able to anticipate such activity every day. While this is not necessary, you should know that dogs are creatures of habit. Thus, they would prefer to have a routine when it comes to their daily activities.

The frequency of your walk will vary depending on the type of dog that you own. There are a few breeds that require 2-4 walks per day, such as the Border collie. But there are also dogs that should be fine with two walks a day, such as a pug. It’s really hard to determine the most appropriate times that you should take your dog for a walk. However, other factors must be taken into consideration, such as their level of energy and their age.

Here's what you need to know about the different times of the day to walk your dog:

Morning

Walking your dog in the morning just before breakfast is a good practice most especially in summer since the temperature in the morning is still mild. Thus, any cases of heatstroke can be greatly avoided. Your morning walk should last for 30 minutes to an hour and must be your longest walk for the day. Walking in the morning is not only beneficial for your dog, but you as well.

Afternoon

Afternoons may not be the best time to take your dog out for a walk, especially if you live in a city where the streets are often busy at this time of the day. But if you need to walk your pooch in the afternoon, you should limit it to 15 minutes only. This should be enough time for your dog to get some exercise but in a more relaxing way.

But for those who live in the countryside with lots of trees in the surroundings, taking your dog for an afternoon walk would be a great idea. But be careful with walking your dog in the summer because the weather could get extremely hot in the afternoon.

Evening

Evening walks usually is the most preferred time for dog owners to walk their pooch. During this time, the surroundings are calmer and more relaxed, which makes for a more relaxing walk with your pooch. Also, after your walk, your pet will immediately doze off.

If your evening walk is the first real walk for your pooch for the day, try to stay a little bit longer to allow your pooch to run, play around, and use up all the energy it has left for the day. That way, when you get home, it will be easy for your dog to get a good night’s sleep. When going for a walk in the evening, make sure you put on some night visibility safety accessories such as a dog LED collar.
