What Essential Oils Kills Fleas?

One of the most challenging experiences I have had as a dog owner is dealing with pest infestations on my pooch. Whether it is fleas, ticks or mites, it is an uncomfortable experience for me and absolutely unbearable for the dogs.

If, unfortunately, you are in the middle of such a crisis then you have come to the right place. From my research and personal experiences, I have learned quite a number of tips and tricks over the years (I have documented ALL 37 of ways to get rid of fleas in dogs right here in this article!) that could come in handy when it comes to dealing with fleas and ticks on your furry bestie.

What I find among the best ways to get rid of fleas and ticks in dogs is using essential oils. In addition to actually killing the pests in their different stages, they also help to prevent infestation by repelling the bugs with their natural fragrances. Let us take a look at effective superstars in the game like lavender, peppermint and cedarwood as well as 9 other awesome essential oils to help you deal with fleas and ticks.

12. Clove

Clove is extremely pungent and therefore super effective when it comes to dealing with fleas and ticks. It repels them not only from your dog’s body but also from indoor spaces. When applying it on the dog, it is best to dilute it because in concentrated amounts it could have some toxic effects.

We recommend the Healing Solutions Clove Essential Oil for its pure and therapeutic grade formula that is ideal for both aromatherapy and dog sprays.

11. Frankincense

Frankincense has a lot to offer your dog when dealing with fleas and ticks. In addition to the natural fragrances that repel the bugs, the essential oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that soothe the irritated skin.

For these perks, check out Cliganic Organic Frankincense Essential Oil. Your dog will definitely benefit from the GMO-free and 100% natural formulation. With the strong concentration, a little goes a long way and with water or a carrier oil, you will definitely get value for your buck.

10. Rose Geranium Oil

This is not a very commonly used essential oil but it is very effective for getting rid of fleas and ticks. It stands out in that in addition to repelling the bugs with its strong fragrance, the oil can kill them in different stages of life. For this effect, it is best to apply a diluted amount on the dog’s skin by spraying or massaging. Just make sure they don’t taste it because it is bitter.

Try Healing Solutions Rose Geranium Essential Oil which is perfect for its pure rose geranium oil formula.

9. Lemongrass

Lemongrass smells fantastic, unless of course you are a tick or a flea. They tend to avoid spaces where the scent is strongest. This means you can use it not only on your dog but also on furniture and carpeting where the fleas like to hide and breed. Check out Gya Labs Lemongrass Essential Oil. Its formula allows for different uses including spraying, direct application, or aromatherapy which makes it one of the most versatile and convenient solutions on our list.

8. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is easily one of the most effective essential oils when it comes to killing ticks, mites and fleas. It kills the adults, larvae and even the eggs for complete eradication.

However, it is important to note that when ingested, eucalyptus could cause problems for the dog including diarrhea and pain. It is therefore best applied in diluted forms. For this, try the Nature’s Truth Eucalyptus 100% Pure Essential Oil which is particularly awesome for aromatherapy and surface sprays.

7. Thyme

Thyme is highly effective in repelling fleas and ticks with its spicy natural fragrances. However, it does not actually kill the fleas or their eggs so several applications may be required to completely get rid of the creepy crawlers. For the dog’s safety, it is best to apply it either as a diluted spray or through aromatherapy. We recommend Healing Solutions Organic Thyme Essential Oil, which is organic and free from any chemical additives.

6. Rosemary

Rosemary is very gentle on the dog’s skin and is therefore fantastic for repelling fleas and ticks through baths.

Just prepare your pooch’s bath water and add a few drops of the essential oil into the water. Let the dog soak in it for a few minutes then go on with your washing. This coats their fur with the beautifully scented oils, thus repelling the bugs.

For this, try the Botanical Beauty Organic ROSEMARY Essential Oil which has the purest and highest quality formula out there.

Organic ROSEMARY Essential Oil. 100% Pure Therapeutic Grade, Premium Quality, Undiluted, Steam Distilled. 0.17 Fl.oz.- 5 ml. by Botanical Beauty.
  • 100 % PURE THERAPEUTIC GRADE ESSENTIAL OIL. Extraction Method: STEAM DISTILLED. No chemicals or synthetic solvents. No fillers, additives or carriers added.

5. Neem

Neem extracts have for a very long time been used as pesticides and insecticides. They are very effective in killing fleas at different stages of life. The oil also offers soothing effects on skin irritated by the bites while also helping to prevent infections and inflammation. Natura Bona Organic Neem Oil is one of the best options for you on the market. It is fantastic for sprays and topical application in general to deal with the infestation.

4. Chamomile

Chamomile does a lot for the dog when it comes to flea and tick infestations. First off, it has a sweet scent that the bugs absolutely hate. It is therefore perfect for getting rid of them whether it is on the dog itself or on surfaces where they like to hide.

The oil also has anti-inflammatory effects and also calms the often agitated dogs down. Aura Cacia Pure Roman Chamomile Essential Oil definitely stands out with its pure and light formula that is perfect for aromatherapy.

3. Cedarwood

Cedarwood is one of the most potent options on this list of essential oils for killing fleas and ticks. It is one of the few that in addition to repelling the crawlers also kills them. It is also safe enough to apply on the dog’s skin. However, it should be diluted either with water or carrier oils for this purpose. Options like Healing Solutions Cedarwood Essential Oil are also fantastic for use in essential oil diffusers to get rid of the pests everywhere in the house.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint is one of the most popular essential oils in commercial flea eradication preparations. However, it only serves the purpose of repelling the ticks and fleas and does not actually kill them. There is also the fact that it has the potential for being irritating in concentrated amounts. It is therefore best used together with other oils like lavender for the dog’s safety and for overall increased effectiveness. For this we recommend you try Cliganic USDA Organic Peppermint Essential Oil for both topical and diffuser use.

We recommend the Healing Solutions Clove Essential Oil for its pure and therapeutic grade formula that is ideal for both aromatherapy and dog sprays.

1. Lavender

By far. Hands down. Lavender takes the top spot with its combination of benefits that promote prevention and recovery from flea and tick infestation. It is highly effective in repelling the bugs especially when combined with other pungent essential oils like peppermint.

Lavender also has a calming effect on the dog which definitely makes dealing with the uncomfortable conditions easier for everyone involved.

Finally, lavender has been shown to be effective against mange for getting rid of the mites and soothing the irritated skin. For these and other benefits, we strongly recommend Cliganic USDA Organic Lavender Essential Oil.
