What Is A Daschund Poodle (Doxiepoo) Mix?

The first time I encountered a doxiepoo was at a dog park and I remember thinking that there was probably nothing as adorable on the entire planet.

It is no wonder that they are among the most popular mixed breed pooches on the market. It is still on my doggy wish list and my research on what to expect from owning one only encouraged my desire to have one.

If you are thinking about adding a doxiepoo to your family, here is all you need to know about them.

A doxiepoo is a mixed breed dog that is a product of breeding a dachshund with a poodle. However, this is not the only way to get them.

They are one of the few mixes that are also successfully produced by breeding 2 of the intended mix breeds which in this case would be a pair of doxiepoos.

The dachshund poodle mix is also one of the most unpredictable designer dogs when it comes to appearance. More often than not, they take after the dachshund build and the poodle’s coat traits.

Other features like the size, temperament and health issues are a mix of both contributing bloodlines.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what we are dealing with, let us take a closer look at what you have to expect with these lovable pooches.

What Does A Dachshund Poodle Look Like?

When it comes to the appearance of dachshund poodles, it is not possible to give any specific description. This is because they vary so much depending on parent traits and simple chance.

They may be large, small, curly-haired, smooth-haired and so many other variations that you simply have to take what you get. The one thing that remains true is that each and every one of them is as adorable as their endearing parents.

When it comes to the size, chance and genetics are what determine how big a doxiepoo will get. More often than not, they fall into the small or medium categories. This is due to the influence of the doxie parent over the often larger poodles.

Doxiepoos can grow to between 8 to 23 inches in height and weight from 5 to 30 pounds.

For the most part, these doggies take after the dachshund side when it comes to the physical build. They tend to have long torsos and disproportionately short legs. However, if bred with large poodles, the doggy may have longer legs and a more compact build.

The coat texture on the other hand usually resembles that of the poodle parent. They may have soft and curly hair which does not shed as much as your regular doxie. However, it is not uncommon to have them take after their dachshund parent with short, long or wiry coat types. These coats come in a variety of colors including:

  • Black
  • Brown
  • Grey
  • Tan
  • Apricot
  • Cream
  • White

Do Doxiepoo Dogs Shed? Grooming Tips For The Dachshund Poodle Mix

The doxiepoo is not always considered hypoallergenic. This is despite the fact that poodles that contribute half of the genes are considered hypoallergenic dogs. The doxiepoo sheds lightly especially if it takes after the curly hair of the poodle. This might be a little easier to deal with if there is someone allergic to dogs in the house.

However, if they take after the dachshund side with longer and finer hair then it is more problematic. This is because they tend to shed more and are therefore more likely to trigger allergies. They also need more grooming than the curly-haired doxiepoos.

You can deal with the shedding easily by ensuring that you brush the dachshund poodle mix’s fur on a regular basis. If they have curly hair, you can do it once a week. If, on the other hand they have longer and finer hair you may need to do it 2 to 3 times every week.

The Miracle Coat Slicker Small Dog Brush is designed to help make this aspect of the doxiepoo’s grooming easier and more efficient. The brush has fine metal pins that are curved and flexible. This makes them ideal to deal with the dog’s hair whether it is in tight curls or it is fine and straight.

If you are dealing with a light-colored dachshund poodle, regular washing is very important. This includes coat colors like cream, white and light tans. This is because they easily get dirt and stains and washing is therefore necessary to keep the coat looking clean and healthy. In this case, you can do it every month or two.

Health Problems Of A Doxiepoo

The doxiepoo has a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. This is much closer to that of the Poodle with which the mix shares most of its health traits.

Like most other mixed breeds, the dachshund poodle is a relatively healthy dog with the mixing of genes helping reduce the risk of certain breed-specific conditions. However, it still does suffer from some of them including:

Back And Joint Problems

The most common in this case is intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) which causes severe pain and affects mobility. The dog may also suffer from other skeletal conditions including hip dysplasia and patella luxation.

Heart Disease

These diseases may either be congenital or as a result of other issues like obesity. If not treated promptly, they may result in sudden deaths at an early age for the pooch.

Diabetes

This may either be congenital or as a result of being overweight. It affects the doxiepoo’s immunity, healing and metabolism and is associated with complications like hyperglycemic comas.

Seizure Disorders

These are inherited disorders that affect the pooch throughout their life. Though scary, the seizures are rarely directly fatal and with proper treatment and closely monitoring your doxiepoo should be able to live a relatively normal life.

Dermatitis

This is more often than not due to allergic reactions to triggers like dust mites, fleas, chemicals and some fabrics. It causes intense itching with damage to the skin.

With all of these conditions, proper nutrition plays a huge role in control. The Zesty Paws Pure Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is a fantastic example of how what you feed your doxiepoo can help improve the quality of their life. It is rich in omega oils, DHA, and EPA which help maintain the health of the pooch’s skin, coat, hips and joints, heart, and immune system.

Temperament Of A Doxiepoo – More Poodle Or More Dachshund

As with the appearance, the personality and general temperament of a doxiepoo is pretty unpredictable. Each one takes a different set of traits from either parents. There are, however, several traits that are common to most of these doggies which you may have to deal with when raising them. Here are a few of them:

Clever

Poodles are considered of high intelligence while dachshunds fall in the above average category of smarts. The resulting doxiepoo is known for their cleverness which comes in particularly handy when it comes to training.

Stubborn

Sometimes, you may have to deal with the stubbornness from the dachshund side of the family in your doxiepoo mix. The good news is that they are generally easier to deal with and their fits are few and far between.

Bark A Lot

Dachshund poodles take after their loud and easily excitable parents with their love for barking. They bark when they are scared, hungry, bored, and sometimes with no discernible reason. The best way to deal with this is by bark control training.

Independent

They get this from the poodle bloodline. Doxiepoos are not afraid to be left alone and know exactly how to keep themselves busy before their loving human besties return.

Clingy And Affectionate

If you want a dog that will love on you with all they have then the dachshund poodle might just be the dog for you.

Playful

Doxiepoos love to stay active whether they are indoors or outdoors. You therefore have to prepare yourself for the inevitable demands for playtime and attention that you will be getting from them.

How Much Are Doxiepoos?

The price of doxiepoos varies greatly. You can get one for as low as $200 or as high as $2000. Several factors determine just how much you will have to part with in order to take one of these adorable little pooches home.

The first is the appearance. Smaller doxiepoos with curly hair are more popular and therefore more expensive. In addition to aesthetics, the fact that they are easier to manage and the friendlier option for allergic owners also drives up the price.

It also depends a lot on the pedigree of the parents. This matters more on the poodle side but may also be determined by the doxie bloodline. If the parent poodle is from a priced bloodline then the cost of purchasing their doxiepoo offspring will definitely be higher than getting one from any regular old pooch.

It also depends on where exactly you get your doxiepoo from. It is a well-known fact that getting a dog from high end breeders is more expensive. The same case applies with doxiepoos with prices as high as $1500. If you want proper certification and bloodline tracing with your purchase you may have to pay a lot more.

However, you do not have to bleed yourself dry in order to own one of these adorable little pooches. They are relatively common so if you look hard enough you could find one at a rescue center. These are usually cheaper and may even be free for adoption.

Despite the high cost of purchase, dachshund poodles are relatively cheap to maintain. It will cost you between $650 and $1200 per year depending on health status, their size, and grooming needs.
